Pearl Harbor, October 1941
We Remember Pearl Harbor!
Now it’s Time to Restore Pearl Harbor!
Now it’s Time to Restore Pearl Harbor!
Pearl Harbor needs your help!
Within the serene waters of Pearl Harbor the lies an invisible, but very real danger: poison. The toxins in Pearl Harbor's waters are not unique to industrialized ports around the world, however Pearl Harbor is unlike any other seaport.
Pearl Harbor holds a special place in the hearts of Americans and especially Veterans. Few key events have shaped the character of our nation like the attack that occurred on December 7th, 1941. This was an event that launched the United States into the Second World War. The war that cost the lives of over 407,000 American Servicemen began with the loss of over 2,400 on that fateful day, over 900 of which remain at rest in the hull of the USS Arizona, as well as 54 still with the USS Utah.
No other harbor holds such cultural importance as Pu'uloa does for the Hawaiian people and no other American seaport holds such historical significance for our nation as Pearl Harbor. These two sacred places are one in the same. Despite its importance, the three lochs of the harbor have been poorly maintained and terribly contaminated by industrial and agricultural run-off.
Hui O Ho'ohonua (HOH808) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit established in 2015 by retired military combat veteran’s Anthony (Tony) Chance and Heath Todd. HOH808 is determined to restore this area of cultural and historical significance back into a clean and sustainable ecosystem. HOH808 has chosen not to accept that these sacred waters should remain littered and so polluted that the fish of the waterway have been classified inedible. It is an ecological catastrophe and we are the only nonprofit organization that is willing to take on what many have labeled an impossible task. We have already organized multiple community-level clean-ups and have been recognized on the floor of the Hawaii Senate for our efforts thus far.
We are called to do more.
HOH808 has accepted a mission that is righteous and bigger than all of us and we need your help. Our hope is that you will share in our determination to make a difference that is meaningful, not just to the environment, but to a culture, and to our nation's history. Funding is critical in order for us to operate at a level that makes substantive and sustaining progress toward the goal of rejuvenating the waters of Pearl Harbor.
Please consider making your donation online at www.hoh808.org or mail a check or money order to Hui O Ho’ohonua, 91-1224 Kaihuopalaai St. Ewa Beach HI. 96706. Your tax-deductible donation will initially go toward administrative positions such as educational specialists and grant writers, while our unpaid staff and volunteers continue to push forward with community-level clean-up efforts.
In the eyes of many Hawaii is perfect, but it has the same struggles as many municipalities. The task ahead for HOH808 is not to make a “pretty place prettier” it is to revert an ecological disaster back into a community resource and a contaminated dumping ground into a respectful place of reverence for our fallen.
