Generational Stewardship
Welcome to the Waipahū Māla!
Nestled in the wetlands of Waikele, this 7 acre project is being transformed from a invasive species hotspot to a productive food garden anticipated to feed the Waipahu community. Focusing on student lead stewardship, increasing accessibility to food sources, and developing innovative technologies with guidance from `ike kūpuna, ancestral knowledge, we hope to begin feeding our community by 2030.

Join the Hana
This project broke ground in 2023 and continues to be stewarded by Future Farmers of America Waipahu Chapter, Waipahu Intermediate students, and the HOH hui. Following mentorship from Kūpuna, Hercules Huihui, the vision for this plot is to recreate terraced lo`i kalo that was once found in the area. The terraced lo`i kalo has the potential to feed the entire Waipahu community, from Waikele to Ho`ae`ae and further pending the harvest.
In August 2024, we celebrated our 1st birthday in the māla! We have come a long way but there is much more to go and we need the communities help to get there. As we move soil, we are unearthing cement blocks, old metal pipes, numerous invasive plant species, and old waste piles. If we want to begin feeding our community it is going to take community involvement to get us started. We invite all people of all ages and expertise levels to join us in building sustainable practices for our community. |
Although the māla is not open to the public, we encourage you to join us at advertised community workday or reach out to HOHʻs Community Coordinator through the contact form below to schedule a visit. Keep up to date by following us on Instagram @huiohoohonua
